Things to Do in Napa – Skyline Wilderness Park

Looking for something safe to do outdoors in Napa, California? Why not visit Skyline Wilderness Park? It is tucked away within the foothills and overlooks the beautiful Napa Valley. The park provides many recreational options, including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, disc golf, camping, and archery. It is located at 2201 Imola Avenue in Napa and is open every day of the week from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dogs and other domesticated animals are not allowed on the wilderness trails in order to protect the wildlife.

History of Skyline Wilderness Park

The land behind the Napa State Hospital was declared surplus in 1979 and was set to go on the market for private party sale. A citizens group formed and enlisted the assistance of members of local government and the community to convert the land into a park. Incorporation papers were drafted, a constitution was written, and studies on the environmental impact were completed. The land was leased to Napa County and then subleased to the Skyline Park Citizens Association.

Activities in the Park

  • Hiking. This is a year-round activity that changes with the seasons. In the spring, colorful wildflowers dot the hills. In the fall, golden grasses fill the park. There is plenty of wildlife throughout the year. Visitors can spend an hour or the entire day hiking through rolling hills, fields, oak trees, and manzanita forests. There are great views of the famous Napa vineyards. In the summer, the park trails range from wooded and shaded to brightly lit with sunshine. The highest point within the park is Sugarloaf, at an elevation of 1630 feet. It affords the best views – vineyards, and on clear days Mt. Diablo, the San Francisco Bay, and Mt. Tamalpais.
  • Disc Golf. The park includes a 400 acre 18-hole disc golf course, which can be played easily within two hours. There are tee signs designating each hole. Hiking shoes are advised.
  • Archery. The Silverado Archery Club maintains ranges on 25 of the park’s acres. Each range includes 14 permanent targets. A number of archery tournaments are held each year, and a 16-week unmarked distance series is held on Thursday evenings from April to the end of July and is open to the public. The Thursday evening series allows hunters to prepare for hunting season.
  • Camping. RV and tent camping sites are available within the park. Showers and flushing toilets are only a short walk from the campsites. Camping reservations are first-come, first-served, meaning you cannot reserve a particular site. Full and partial hookups are available.
  • Mountain Biking. The park has a variety of multi-use gravel road and single track trails. All trails are shared with hikers, walkers, and equestrians, so caution is imperative. Many mountain bikers attach a bell to their bike in order to warn others on the trails of their presence. Most bike trails within the park require at least intermediate, if not advanced, mountain biking skills. Bike helmets are required, and additional protective gear is recommended since many trails include technical sections.
  • Horseback Riding. The miles of multi-use trails are open to horseback riders. The park also includes equestrian facilities such as an obstacle course, arena, and staging areas.
